The Benefits of Manicures & Pedicures at Halcyon Spa

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

Look at your nails. Are they clean and well-shaped? Are they elegantly polished or artistically designed? Are your hands soft without hangnails or dry skin? What about your feet? You might be thinking, ‘It’s fall and headed toward winter; no one will see my feet right now.’ While that may be true, we are in Florida, which means sweater weather in the morning. Tank top in the afternoon. So why not indulge in a pedicure? Manicures and pedicures are also great ways to destress, so let Halcyon Spa help you destress and beautify your nails, especially this holiday season. We know that’s when you need it most.

What Are the Steps In A Manicure?

For those who have never had a manicure, the process is simple.

  1. Remove any previous polish on the nails.

  2. Soak nails in a cleansing, softening solution with water.

  3. Cuticles are cleaned up, and nails are shortened and filed.

  4. Depending on your salon and its manicure options, an exfoliating scrub is sometimes added here.

  5. Lotion or oil is now applied to soften your hands.

  6. The nails are then prepped and polished.

If you prefer a gel polish that lasts roughly two weeks (sometimes up to four), that is usually done before the soak to prevent early lifting and fungus. This process may vary depending on the salon you go to.

What Happens During A Pedicure?

A pedicure is similar to a manicure but done on the feet. It also adds extra exfoliation for calluses that may have formed. This generally falls after the scrub and before the lotion (steps four and five above).

Benefits of Nail Treatments

The benefits of having a nail treatment at Halcyon Spa in Fort Myers are both physical and mental. When your nails look good, you not only feel better about yourself, but you make sure your nails are healthy. The physical benefits of a manicure include the following:

  1. Improves Circulation and Activates Reflexology Pressure Points - As mentioned in The Benefits of a Massage at Halcyon Spa Fort Myers, massage is known to improve circulation, but having a pedicure with a massage breaks up where tension pools in the body thanks to gravity. It also activates pressure points located throughout the feet. This can reduce various ailments, including back pain, sinus pressure, and more. Also, the calluses that can not only be annoying and unsightly may be an indication of uneven weight distribution. Knowing where these are can help determine if better posture alleviates unnecessary back pain.

  2. Prevents Infection and Encourages Healthy Nails - The nails are inspected, cleaned, and trimmed, which helps keep them clean and free of problem-causing germs. If a fungus is found, your nail technician can let you know so you can see a doctor who will recommend treatment options. Removing dead skin cells encourages new cell growth, allowing your nails to grow healthier and stronger.

  3. Reduces Foot Odor - Dead skin can sometimes lead to germs that cause odor. Exfoliating this dead skin and adding lovely-scented creams, lotions, or oils can help heal cracked areas, further preventing areas that harbor odor-causing bacteria.

  4. Reduces Stress and Boosts Mood- The massage you receive, even if short, can reduce stress. Taking the time to pamper yourself with a mani and pedi can reduce your stress levels because you take time for yourself, which many of us forget to do. Plus, a massage can release endorphins, and “Endorphins make you happy.” (Yes, we did say this before.)

Men Should Get Them Too!

Yes, men can have manis and pedis. They, too, can enjoy the benefits listed above. In fact, GQ (Gemtelman’s Quarterly), the go-to magazine for stylish, well-groomed men, wrote the article Pedicures for Men: Everything You Need to Know in 2019, touting the benefits of pedicures for men. Even Esquire published an article titled 2020 is the Year of the Menicure. Rolling Stone wrote this in May 2023: From Tom Sandoval to Harry Styles, Men Are Proudly Parading Their Nail Polish.
